Flooring Installation

Flooring installation replaces the surface you walk on, and the part that decides whether it lasts is the part nobody sees. On Florida slabs, prep and moisture control matter more than the material you pick.

What flooring do you install?

We install tile and laminate. Those two cover most of what Treasure Coast homes need, and they behave very differently in our climate.

Tile means porcelain or ceramic, set on a properly prepared base. It is what we use in wet areas, on bathroom floors, and anywhere that takes hard use.

Laminate is the faster, lower cost option for bedrooms, halls, and living areas. Modern laminate looks convincingly like wood and handles daily traffic well.

Is tile or laminate better for a Florida home?

For wet areas, tile, without much debate. It does not swell, it does not lift, and it handles standing water. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and entryways should be tile.

For dry rooms, laminate is a reasonable choice and costs less. The catch is water. A laminate floor that gets a slow leak under it will swell at the seams and has to come up.

Many homes end up with both, and that is usually the right answer: tile where water lives, laminate where it does not.

How much does flooring installation cost?

This Old House puts tile floor installation at $2 to $100 per square foot in its 2026 guide, with most jobs landing around $4 to $10 per square foot and a 150 square foot room running about $1,500 to $6,000 for materials plus professional installation.

That is a published market figure, not our quote. We do not publish a laminate range because we could not verify one from a source we trust, and we would rather say that than make a number up.

Room size, how much old floor has to come out, and how much prep the slab needs all move the price. We measure and quote for free.

Do you have to remove the old floor first?

Almost always, yes. Laying new flooring over an old failing one hides the problem and raises the floor height at every doorway.

Tearing out old tile is the slowest part of many flooring jobs, especially when it was set in a thick mortar bed. It is dusty work, and we contain it and haul the debris out rather than leaving it in your driveway.

Occasionally a sound, flat existing floor can stay as an underlayment. We tell you when that is genuinely safe rather than when it is merely faster for us.

Can you put new flooring over a concrete slab?

Yes, and most homes here are slab on grade, so this is the normal case. The question is moisture.

Concrete slabs pass moisture vapor upward. Tile handles that fine. Laminate does not, so it needs a proper vapor barrier underlayment between the slab and the planks. Skipping that is a common shortcut and it is why some laminate floors cup a year or two after installation.

We also check the slab for flatness. A slab with dips needs leveling compound before anything goes down, or you will feel every low spot underfoot.

Will new flooring fix an uneven floor?

Only if we fix the base, and that is a separate step. New tile laid over a wavy slab will crack at the low points, and laminate will flex and click.

Leveling is not expensive compared to redoing a failed floor, but it does add a day and a material cost. We check the slab with a straightedge during the estimate so this is priced in from the start, not discovered halfway through.

How long does a floor take to install?

A single room is often one to two days. A whole house of tile can run a week or more, mostly because of demolition and prep rather than the tile setting itself.

Tile also needs time to set before you walk on it and more before grouting. We schedule that in and tell you which rooms are off limits on which days, so you are not trapped at the back of the house.
